WEIGH IN ON THESE NETBOOKS!

September 29th, 2009

imagesIf you are interested in a computer that is lightweight, easy to use and cost less than $300.00 dollars then you should consider a netbook.

Netbooks are a new small computer that looks and acts like a big laptop but has some differences.  Now there is an array of low-cost but highly portable and efficient little laptops for you to choose from.

Most netbooks are full-featured with screen displays that range in the 7 to 10 inch range and all are easy to carry around.  They can weigh between 2.5 to 3 pounds.

For components, the netbooks offer several USB ports, a webcam, a LED backlit screen, integrated speakers, Wi-Fi and more.  The processor in the netbook is for the most part, the Intel Atom Processor.   Most have 1 GB of memory and 160 GB of hard drive; however some new ones are being sold with 2 GB of memory and 250GB of hard drive.  You’ll have to do without a DVD or CD Drive.

Most of the netbooks have Windows XP as their operating systems; but you may find Windows Vista or Linux as its operating system.

Routine applications such as web browsing, e-mail and word processing run fine, however gaming and video-editing will not be efficient due to the slower processing speed.

The portability and weight are very important for the people who use these.  The battery life can range from 3-9 hours, however, keep in mind that the longer the battery life, the bigger the battery, and the heavier the netbook will be.

Netbooks also mean that the keyboards are scaled down to fit the width of the device.  This means that it may be difficult to type for extended periods of time.  Many netbooks are produced outside of the US and this means that they may have non-standard key placement so you should look closely at the netbook.

I recommend this for a person who mainly wants to surf the web and e-mail.  It is great for reading the newpapers from different cities or checking the latest weather so you can plan your schedule.  It is light, portable, and easy to use.   If you want to get someone who may not be as proficient as you on the computer, this is a great computer to start with and the price is reasonable.  The average cost of the netbook is $299-$350 and they often go on sale.
