One cannot help but wonder why companies are continuing to invest large sums to develop cheaper but less sophisticated hardware that requires consumers to sacrifice performance for price. Take, for example, the underpowered netbooks and tablets that many companies now offer. Those devices suffer from limited local processing and limited local storage, raising the question whether over the long term consumers will continue to be willing to compromise performance.

Do the difficult economic times we are now in provide companies the opportunity to design simpler, dumber and cheaper devices that provide high performance by using information and software not stored in the device itself? This simplified design concept would “replace” hard disk storage with the Internet, maintaining functionality while bringing down the cost of production.

With cloud computing coming into play, the design of dumber and yet high performance devices is now becoming possible. Cloud computing allows computer resources to be accessed from a virtual online “cloud” rather than a local desktop or organizational data center. That way a particular device would not require internal processing capability and memory space, but would access software, hardware and even utilities online.
